2014 Oscar Nomination Predictions

The Oscar season has taken the form of a lot of different narratives so far this year. First, Foxcatcher was supposed to win everything and Channing Tatum and Steve Carrell were both going to be nominated for Best Actor. Then Boyhood was released and shut everyone up. Then Birdman. And then Selma came out of nowhere with a ton of momentum. And then Unbroken and Into the Woods were dropped on Christmas, and left many unimpressed. And then American Sniper took its sweet time being released, and will probably suffer because of it.

And now, on Thursday, things will all change. The Oscar nominations will be revealed, and new narratives will be constructed while others are destroyed. That being said, before I get to my predictions, here is what I think will be the big stories coming out of Thursday.

  • The Oscars love The Grand Budapest Hotel. I’m predicting Pic, Director and (yes, I really think this can happen) Actor nominations, among a ton of many others. Anderson is long overdue for some recognition, and his latest is getting his best acclaim to date.
  • The Oscars also really love Birdman, and it’ll score a ton of nominations in the major and technical categories.
  • Into the Woods, Foxcatcher, Unbroken, Inherent Vice, American Sniper, and Interstellar are largely ignored in the big categories. Josh Brolin will score a “surprise” nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
  • We’ll see a lot of what we know in a year that produced some daring stuff. That’s right, another year with a Meryl Streep nomination, a ton of nominations for The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game (which are both perfectly fine movies, they are your typical “Oscar movies”), and the majority of the nominations will be coming from films that were also nominated for Best Picture. It’s essentially the same thing every year.

So, without further ado, let’s get to my Oscar nomination predictions. Because I have nothing at stake, I went with a lot of “risky” choices that probably won’t make the cut, but they all gave me a gut feeling. It’s the same one I had last year when I predicted Christian Bale making it into the Best Actor race for American Hustle when everyone else thought the category’s choices were already set in stone.

** I didn’t predict the following categories because I don’t know enough about what’s eligible/how the nominees are picked: Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Design, Best Foreign Film, Best Documentary, Best Animated Short, Best Short Film, Best Documentary Short Subject and Best Original Song (why is this still a category?). **
